Re: THERE SHOULD BE DRUMS - The moon is very strange.

Reply by Mohorovicic, Thursday, May 26, 2005, 15:30:

Then either your memory is either very faulty, or you have moved to a different latitude. (How high the moon rises depends both on the time of year and the latitude you are observing from.) Having been an amateur astronomer for over forty years (YIKES! It can't be that long!), and have lived in both the northern and southern part of the country, I can tell you that both the sun and moon are behaving exactly as they always have (at least as they have for the past forty years).
Yes, the sun is exactly where it is supposed to be.
: ~
: There should be drums, there should be crowds in the streets
: pointing and speaking in hushed whispers and quiet midnight
: calls through the trees to neighbors.
: For two nights running now, the moon has managed to rise and
: set IN THE SOUTH part of the sky.

Reply by FreeSpeak, Wednesday, May 25, 2005, 16:51:

: If you check any astronomical/planetarium program or website,
: you will see that, for this time of year, the moon is
: SUPPOSED to be exactly where you describe it.
SURPRISE, SURPRISE!
These are the same people who (according to one other STA observer at least) have been revising the moonrise/moonset data on a reasonably consistent basis to reflect the data as to WHAT IS - not what it is "supposed to be" based on past history.
Just how often do we need to see changes to the data to become suspicious of it? When do Things Eternal become suddenly temporal?
I for one take Cliff's observations at face value even though they are what - 10 months old BECAUSE HE IS PAYING ATTENTION AND REPORTING WHAT HE SEES.
Sorry sir, I disagree. I for one have been told too many things that do not necessarily agree with my aging memory or view of reality. I have seen the full moon - very much like the one we have now - rise in the east, transit directly overhead and set in the west, many many times, just like the sun.
Try this........... The Mona Lisa has a very thin moustache. The price of gasoline is 52.9 cents per gallon. The dollar bill is worth 89 cebnts. If we all AGREE to that, it's the truth.
I happen to AGREE that the data you are referring to is indeed CORRECT and is stating exactly where the moon IS. Does it agree with the SAME data from say........... 1935? THEY are telling you in very accurate reports, what IS. From that we must assume that everything is allright, just fine, hunky-dory and even swell. I can't wait to get to work tomorrow.
I am telling you there should be drums.
But that would wake the sleeping.
FreeSpeak

Reply by Anya, Wednesday, May 25, 2005, 14:18:

I don't know much about Lunar positions. But I thought the last two nights it was lower to the horizon than I ever remember seeing it from my house. Not only that, but it has been INCREDIBLY bright. I need no form of artificial light when I'm outside in the dark and can see everything clearly. It's like a flood light from the neighbors house or something. It doesn't sound like much, but it's bugged me for the last two nights.
In my bedroom we sleep right below the window, one of my cats who likes to destroy things to get attention to be let outside, has broken 5 peices of the blinds, leaving a hole. Well the moon has been shining directly through that hole, which I happen to sleep below. It's woken me up in the middle of the night. I have to sleep in a certain spot as the moon moves across the sky so as not to get a bright shining light beaming into my eyes when I try to sleep.
I don't know, maybe it's just me.
