As I mentioned, I am no astronomer,so you won't get any Carl Sagan like explanations from me.

The MOON is either way off it's transit path by a HUGE arc or the EARTH is, I suppose it has to do with the vertical position (declination or acension position? Help me here)

I went out later after posting and the star or planet that was in line was still below the moon, and the previous night the moon was high, really high above the star or planet.

If 0 is the moon

And if * is the star

And ----- is the treeline

At about that angle, a mirror image reversal.
