Churches ditch the hymn book to try out 'religious karaoke' (STA BREAKING NEWS and ARCHIVES)

by Theresa @, Tuesday, September 12, 2017, 16:06

The hymn book has been a focus of worship for hundreds of years. But an increasing number of churches are ditching them in favour of big screens projecting the words instead.

Churches are spending up to £50,000 on audio-visual systems including projector screens and LCD TVs for parishioners, with hundreds installing them in the past five years.

Boyd Breen, owner of AV Installs Ltd, said his clients told him it was cheaper to subscribe to a licensing service which allowed them to project the words to hymns and worship songs instead of buying books.

"There has always been technology in churches, it's just developed now from more audio to visual as well. There are lots of hymn books published all the time and some churches buy new ones every year or few months so it's cheaper to subscribe. It's basically religious karaoke."
