Most, by their own doings. The freest way is to be alone and self sufficient. One of the freest persons that ever were, was John 'Crow Killer, Liver Eatin' Johnson.

But you gotta find a remote place, and these days killing Natives and eating their livers is a bit frowned upon. So is cutting someone's leg off (and letting him live), to have it for dinner; but hey. It was that or starve. That was quite an interesting biography that I read many years ago.
