We are way beyond being capable of caring and feeding the hungry here in America. Even some of our third-world countries put us to shame in our governments lack of care for those individuals, especially the children.

BUT, then again, there are many, many people who already do and more who would just sit back and demand a paycheck for no return on an obligation - ever - and have no compunctions about that.

I know there are many who really do need the assistance and cannot return anything to their communities for the help received and we really do need to take care of those people.

Others who are either mentally or physically capable of returning something to the community - even if it means digitally from their home - should be put on notice that if they cannot commit to their obligations then they should look for another country to live in.

I had a renter who seemed to think her obligation was to fill her garbage can with booze bottles each week.

I hauled Christmas boxes around for the needy as a PTA participant. We tried to deliver a package to a home and a neighbor ran out and said that she would accept it and hold it for the family as they were on vacation in Europe. The box was added to another, by me, for a family that was totally destitute. What was weird was catching political hell for doing so after returning to the school.

I have been around many, many union members who do just the bare minimum to stay employed and hold their hand out for their check each week - with no compunctions or guilt about how they spent their week.

And there are far too many more incidents in too many geographic locations that just this one person has been around to believe that it is only "local". It is pervasive in our society.

For one, I believe that most benefits be handed out on a case-by-case situation where a doctor has chronicled a person's ability to work, and again, whether mentally or physically - and where and how that person might be able to contribute back to the community before any benefits of any kind are distributed on a continual basis. This would not bar or inhibit help in emergency situations on a short-term basis.

I do believe we should have a much higher minimum wage all across America. Corporations and the "good-ole-boys" clubs are sucking the life-blood out of those in the middle class who ARE upholding the many who are unable or unwilling to work as well. What happens when the U.S. Government declares an "austerity program" which all but kills off this middle class? WHO is then going to help? The government sure as hell won't care as it would be their program and they only want to make the program successful. Screw the people!

Oh well, my rant for the day!
I have to go read my seed catalogs and become more self-sufficient!
I guess I'll have to see what $100.00 will do for me.

Good rant LL. You are working with your mind to find a better way out. That's exactly what is needed.. A community spirit actuated by individuals such as yourself. JMHO. based on a theory that a great nation is only as good as it's diet which prompts the question What are mushrooms fed and what does their lighting schedule look like? LOL.

Not trying to make fun of you LL. but rather fun of the System which by now should have been already broke. How far can the Can get kicked? ;)

However .. keeping thinking solutions is a goody my friends so that eventually we WILL cross the Rubicon.
