DOES THE ROYAL LIBRARY OF ALEXANDRIA STILL EXIST? (STA BREAKING NEWS and ARCHIVES)
By Paul Dale Roberts
The Royal Library of Alexandria, also known as the Ancient Library of Alexandria still exists. The Royal Library of Alexandria is rumored to have been destroyed by a fire. Historical accounts tell us that the library may have suffered several fires or acts of destruction over a period of many years. Legend has it that Julius Caesar in 48 BC set the library on fire. An attack by Aurelian in 270 AD may have destroyed the library. After the main library was completely destroyed, ancient scholars talk about a daughter library that was built in a temple called Serapeum. Coptic Pope Theophilus was accused of destroying the daughter library in 391 AD.
QUESTION: HOW MANY BOOKS/SCROLLS WERE IN THE LIBRARY?
ANSWER: King Ptolemy II Philadelphus is said to have placed 500,000 scrolls at the library. Mark Antony gave Cleopatra 200,000 scrolls for the library as a wedding gift. At its peak, the library was said to possess nearly half a million scrolls, and, although historians debate the precise number, the highest estimates claim 400,000 scrolls, while other historians claim as low as 40,000. If 40,000 is the true account, that is still a high amount of written works that would require vast storage space.
