NEW EVIDENCE MOON WAS ERUPTING LAVA WHEN DINOSAURS ROAMED EARTH. (STA BREAKING NEWS and ARCHIVES)
“This finding is the kind of science that is literally going
to make geologists rewrite the textbooks about the moon.”
- John Keller, LRO Project Scientist, NASA's Goddard
Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD
Most lunar scientists assumed the moon's volcanism occurred around 3.5 to 1 billion years ago and that it's been a cold, dead rock ever since. But new data from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, or LRO, indicates more recent lunar lava flows in 70 patches of distinctive dark surface rock that scientists call “irregular mare [sea] patches” (IMPs). Three of the deposits could be less than 100 million years old and one particular patch called Ina might even be 30-50 million years old.
