Hi All,

Geez, I love this forum. Lamamaba, you've done it again! I swear, we can make a cool thread about ANY subject.

Great posts and videos. This thread made me smile, too.

((( Q - great first post, btw! You stood out even way back in 2007! My first post was 5 words - and they weren't even interesting words. :-D )))

Here's an answer for why houseflies fly in squares:

Most insects have four wings; but in many cases, one pair has evolved for a separate purpose. In beetles for instance, the forewings have evolved into hard cases, characteristic of beetles.
Flies are included in the order diptera (meaning 'two wings'). The hind wings have evolved into tiny club-like structures called halteres; which beat in time with the forewings. As the insect flies, the hallteres, which stick out from the body slightly, act like tiny little gyroscopes. Sense organs in the body detect the strain in the halteres, and act like an in-flight guidance system. Because of this, flies can make quick and sudden changes in flight direction, and often are seen flying around eratically, often including sudden right-angle shifts of direction.

So I guess tha answer to your question is that flies fly in squares because they CAN.
