"Although there were fears of many more dead on La Tortue island, Deslorges said: "The government has been in contact with officials on La Tortue. Nothing happened there."

Island hasn’t disappeared
PORT-AU-PRINCE â€" An island off the northern coast of Haiti, La Tortue island, survived the ravages of Hurricane Jeanne and did not disappear as had been feared, Haitian radio reported Tuesday.

The Radio Metropole correspondent in Nord-Ouest province, Eugene Marc-Edouard, said yesterday that the island, with 26,000 inhabitants, was not covered by water.

The correspondent said he had seen the island and it had been spared the ravages of Hurricane Jeanne. He said however, several bodies of people killed in Nord-Ouest province had washed up on the coast of the La Tortue island.

Yesterday, Interim Prime Minister Gerard Latortue had said that helicopter flights by the government and the United Nations had been unable to locate the island, and that there was the ‘possibility of a tidal wave’ that had wiped out the island.

Fishermen on small boats were yesterday preparing to renew their activities between La Tortue island and Port-de-Paix on the northern Haitian coast. Hurricane Jeanne claimed more than 600 lives in Haiti alone, most of them in the city of Gonaives.
